Other Inverts

Welcome to the my page with all my other miscellaneous classifications of invertebrates and otherwise! Such as Springtails, Roaches, Slime Mold/Fungi and more! Species will be sporadically updated on this page as it covers several groups of invertebrates I don't work with as much. If you'd like to make any orders/inquiries, scroll to the bottom of the page to see shipping and contact info!

Basic Bioactive Springtails

Lilac Springtails
(Ceratosphylla sp.)
$10

My most prolific springtail species! Extremely efficient detritivores, generalists as well, they will go for nearly any rotting food, they especially love proteins but as long as the source is wet and rotting they'll go for it! They're also a species that will swarm fecal matter making them a perfect cleaner species. Just give them high humidity with a tad of air flow, they can thrive in high humidity Temperate enclosures and tropical enclosures! Watch for overpopulation though they can become mildly aggressive for food so if you want to reduce populations, bait them with chunks of protein and toss them into another setup or culture for yourself! They are also mild burrowers but tend to travel to find food on the surface a lot, so at times you'll find clusters all together on a resource or they're otherwise scattered.

Cotton Springtails
(Entomobrya unostrigata)
$10
My current favorite species I work with as well as currently my largest in culture! Cotton Springtails are a Canadian native species with hair like fibres along thier body that thrive in captivity! They're an arid to semi-arid species of Springtail that are also extremely active, fairly high jumpers as well! Similar to various arid-tolerant Isopod species, they still require aspects of their environment to retain moisture, whether it be some damp sphagnum under bark, damp soil, food sources like carrots with innate water content etc. Give them that resource and their numbers will explode in no time at all, they tend to struggle if the humidity stays too high or constant, but even just a once or every other day spritz of water will be enough for them! Generally, almost exclusively a terrestrial species that will forage across any and all debris but will become dormant and hide or burrow underground if it's far too dry.

Temperate White Springtails
(Folsomia candida)
$10
The hobbies tried and true springtail species! Thrive in both Temperate and tropical enclosures but don't like it overly hot. They're a very generalist and tiny species, resemble a grain of rice, they jump like crazy when disturbed. This species stays very close to surface level and heavily burrows, making them great if you want a clean up crew and species to aerate your soil, isn't explicitly specialized in one specific niche but good at doing many things for your tank!

Tropical White Springtails
(Sinella curviseta)
$10
Another of the hobbies common species, generally also sold as "Tropical Pinks" which tends to, to my knowledge, be a morph that occurs due to various conditions, but it's fairly easy for cultures to revert to a white coloration after a long time, such as these guys. Not the best clean up crew in comparison to other species, but! They are pretty heavily a surface dwelling species that sticks close to the soil, and with their habits of running a lot more often than jumping, they tend to be the first species on scene to start the decomposition process of old food, fecal matter etc. They won't control mold outbreaks but they may delay it from starting so you can clean up said debris.

Other Springtail Species

Black-Eyed Springtails
(Willowsia nigromaculata)
Captive Bred, working to culture

A species that randomly showed up in my 55 gallon tank with a very small population, and their population did even better when moved to my Pacific Banana Slugs enclosure, which has since allowed me to attempt creating an isolated culture for the species, they are a somewhat larger, arboreal species of springtail, they spend a lot of time on anything that isn't the ground itself.

Slime Molds & Fungi

Slime Mold sp. Culture
$20 per culture

A slime mold that originally appeared in my Narceus americanus millipede bins, I've since cultured it separately several times on flake soil, will also appreciate the usual oat flakes given to slime molds when in culture. Can be added to tanks rich in detritus or cultured on their own, be aware some springtail species will eat them!
